In January, Albino Blacksheep (or ABS) celebrated its twentieth anniversary, so I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what it meant to the Millennials like me who came of age with its content. All my friends and I made simple websites for ourselves on Freewebs (now just Webs) which are long since defunct, and for gaming, I had Neopets, or the official sites for my favourite channels like Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon (anyone else remember Cartoon Cartoon Summer Resort or Courage the Cowardly Dog: Pharaoh Phobia?) But most pertinent to today’s topic was the lack of YouTube, because when I wanted a quick online video fix, my go-to sites were ones like FlowGo… and Albino Blacksheep. Long before I had Facebook, my first experience with social media was chatting to friends on Habbo Hotel (and later MSN Messenger), and rather than Google, my preferred search engine was Ask Jeeves – although neither were guaranteed to find what I was looking for in those days. Things were quite different back then, but I remember it all well. * WARNING: Many of the videos/games below contain violence, flashing images and/or bad language – NSFW*įor this week’s article, I’m really going to be showing my age, because we’re taking a stroll back in time to the internet of the early 2000s.
